IPL 2026 coverage from the working desk.

Squad reads, fixture breakdowns and captaincy notes for the 2026 Indian Premier League. Updated through the playoffs.

Season format

The shape of IPL 2026.

The Indian Premier League 2026 runs from mid-March through the end of May, with ten franchises playing 74 league-stage matches before the playoffs. The format holds: home-and-away within each group pairing, with a four-team playoff bracket and a grand final reserved for the league-stage top two.

From a fantasy-cricket perspective, the key change for 2026 is the salary cap. Each franchise carries a published purse, and the player auction shapes the depth chart before a ball is bowled. The desk reads the auction as the first piece of selection data: a player bought at his base price tells you the franchise plans to use him.

This page is updated through the season. The squad reads on this hub were first published before the tournament began; the captaincy notes are republished weekly.

Fixture rhythm

How the slate lays out.

A weekly read of the IPL 2026 fixture list, with the desk’s view on which matches carry the most fantasy variance.

Week 1

Opening round

Form is last season’s. Read the squads fresh; do not assume the prior XI.

Week 4

First cluster of double-headers

Two matches per day. The captaincy method has to account for cross-day swings.

Week 8

Mid-season trade window

Replacement signings move the depth chart. Update your XI pool before each match.

Week 11

Final league round

Playoff math is in play. Captaincy is conservative; risk is for the practice contests.

Qualifier

Top two play the cut

The most predictable match of the season. Both teams know each other; toss matters more than usual.

Final

The long read

One match, one team, no second chances. The desk publishes a dedicated final-day note the morning of.

Squad reads

Ten franchises, ten reads.

A pre-season brief on each IPL 2026 franchise — the players to watch, the questions the auction left unanswered, and the role the franchise looks for in fantasy selection.

Chennai

Spin-first identity

Chepauk rewards finger-spin. The captaincy method here defaults to the spinner.

Mumbai

Power-hunting top order

Wankhede’s short boundaries suit the power-hitters. Pace depth is the question.

Bengaluru

Chinnaswamy run-fest

The flattest deck in the league. Batters stack; bowlers grind. Captaincy favours the top order.

Hyderabad

Bowling depth play

Uppal’s surface offers something for both disciplines. The franchise has invested in pace variety.

Kolkata

Eden two-paced

The slower surface at Eden gives finger-spin a role and rewards batting through the line.

Delhi

Arena pace-friendly

The Arun Jaitley surface offers bounce and pace. Captaincy swings between the openers and the death bowlers.

Rajasthan

Sawai Mansingh swing

Jaipur offers early movement. Captaincy tilts to the top-order batters who can handle the new ball.

Punjab

PCA IS Bindra run-fest

Short square boundaries. Stack the batting; pick the death bowler carefully.

Lucknow

BRSABV run-fest

The Ekana surface is batting-friendly. Watch for the dew factor.

Gujarat

Narendra Modi stadium

The biggest ground in the league. Captaincy rewards the boundary-clearers.

Captaincy

How the desk reads IPL captaincy.

IPL captaincy is harder than international captaincy because the player pool is shallower per franchise, and one or two star players dominate the salary cap. The desk’s approach is to weight the surface and the matchup first, then the role clarity inside the franchise XI, then the recent form. We publish the rubric and the call on the Predictions page for every match day.

The vice-captain pick is usually the safer choice. In a 14-match league stage, the cumulative gain from a steady 1.5x on a high-floor all-rounder usually beats a 2x gamble on a top-order batter.

Rulebook

The impact-player rule, three seasons on.

The impact-player rule lets each franchise substitute one nominated player from a list of four at any point in the match — before the toss, after the fall of a wicket in the batting powerplay, at the end of an innings, or at the start of the second innings. The substitution can be tactical or situational.

For fantasy selection, the rule means the announced XI is no longer the actual XI. The desk’s read is to treat the impact player as a real selection, not a tactical lever — which means the captaincy logic moves toward the players who bat at four or five, bowl their full allotment regardless of context, and have a clear role in both innings.

The practical consequence: avoid the all-rounder whose role is unclear. If a franchise can swap him out for a batter at the fall of the eighth wicket, his floor is what kills your XI.

Long read

Playoffs and the long read.

A working note on playoff selection logic, republished each season.

The playoffs are the easiest and hardest matches of the season. Easy because the surface and the toss are the dominant variables; hard because the margin for error is zero and the prize pools are concentrated on a single match day.

The desk’s approach: read the surface first, the matchup second, the form third. Toss is decisive; if it goes wrong, we re-issue the captaincy call before the first ball.

The marquee contests settle across the playoff week. The desk publishes a daily note on the Predictions page through the playoff window, with captaincy, vice-captaincy and a one-line rationale.

FAQ

Five questions on the IPL hub.

When does IPL 2026 start?

Mid-March. The exact date is published by the BCCI closer to the season. The desk updates this page when the official schedule lands.

How is the salary cap set?

Each franchise carries a published purse. The auction shapes the depth chart; the cap defines how much of it the franchise can spend on overseas players.

Is the impact-player rule still in effect?

Yes. The rule is unchanged for 2026. The desk treats the impact player as a real selection and avoids all-rounders with unclear roles.

Does the desk publish captain picks for every match?

Yes. The Predictions page carries the desk’s captaincy call for every match day through the league stage and the playoffs.

Can the desk’s track record be verified?

The desk publishes the track record on the Predictions page. Sample size is small over a single season; the desk reports the full record with the right caveats.
